The restoring of friendly relations between God and man. The Fall in the Garden destroyed the good relationship that did exist (“you shall surely die” Gen 2:17) and so needed to be restored.

The Atoning Work of Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ died for the sins of those who would believe, the elect, those whose names are written in the Book of Life. He did not pay the redemption price for those who die as unbelievers, who “die in their sins” (Jn 8:24).
