TODAY’S VERSE:

Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

In prep school, we have begun watching a video series titled, “What’s In The Bible with Buck Denver” from the same people who made the Veggie Tales. Have you seen those before? They are very cool. Anyway, this series uses songs, stories, puppets, and humor to teach us about the Bible and to describe the books included in it. Not only is it very entertaining, it is also a very helpful tool for learning about the most important thing in our life- God and His Word.

We will start this month, as the video series did, with the big picture! The Bible is a collection of stories which tell the story of God and what He has done for His children!
-There are 66 books, written by over 40 people, over a time span of approximately 1600 years. (Remember God is the true Author of the Bible, He used men to write what He inspired them to).
-The Bible is divided into 2 sections, the Old and the New Testaments (The word testament means “oath, covenant, or promise” in Hebrew.) In essence, the two testaments tell us about the promises God made, how He keeps them, and what that means for us today!

Let us first take a look at the Old Testament. It is made up of 39 books, separated into 5 different sections.
1-Torah/Pentateuch
(The first 5 books, written by Moses, describing the creation of the world, the fall of man, and the formation of the Jewish people)
2-Historical section
(These books contain the genealogies [“family trees”], laws, and history of the Jewish people)
3-Prophets
(Books filled with warnings to the Jewish people through God’s chosen prophets regarding what would happen if they continued in their disobedience)
4-Wisdom books
(Books filled with songs, poems, and words of advice from King David, King Solomon, among others)

Next, we have the New Testament which has 27 books,
divided into 4 sections.
1-The Gospels
(Writings centered around the person of Jesus Christ and His time here on Earth, including His teachings and details regarding His life, death, and resurrection)
2-Acts of the Apostles
(Books describing the early days of the church after the Lord’s resurrection as well as details about the Apostle Paul’s missionary trips)
3-Epistles
(These are the Apostle Paul’s letters written to different churches and individuals)
4-Revelation
(Contains the prophecy regarding the end times and return of our Lord Jesus Christ)

Though we love this video series, none of us must ever forget that the best way to learn about the Bible is to read it for ourselves! So, take some time every day to sit and read your Bible, as the theme song says, “Let’s all take a look in the Bible”!
