TODAY’S VERSES:

Galatians 6:9-10 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

The dictionary defines goodness as the quality or state of being good  and good as morally excellent, righteous, of high quality.

The Bible says that God is good and people are not.

Luke 18:19b No one is good—except God alone.

Psalm 107:1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!

Nahum 1:7a The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble;

Romans 3:10 as it is written: None is righteous, no, not one;

“Today’s verses” tell us to do good. We just saw, though, that the Bibles says only God is good. So, then, how can WE possibly do good? We have been learning about the fruit of the Spirit in the Kids’ Corners for some time now and have already looked at kindness, patience, joy, and peace. Any guess as to what goodness is?

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

As you can see, goodness is another fruit of the Spirit. So, although God is the only truly good person, He empowers His children to do good, on His behalf. When we read our Bibles, pray, and do our best to obey God’s commands, we are given the opportunity to do good. So, do we just wake up and decide to do good every morning? Nope! We are to wake up and decide to love and obey God every morning. Then, as we stay focused on Him and how He wants us to live, we are given His power to overcome evil and do good!

Romans 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

God, alone, is good and He is the source of all goodness. Because we are His children and also His ambassadors here on Earth, He shares His goodness with us so we may serve Him. Not only that, He showers us with His love and goodness, showing us just how amazing He is, encouraging us as we live for Him. Take some time today to think of all the ways that God has been good to you, starting with the gift of your salvation and eternal life.

Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

P.S. Did you notice how “today’s verses” tell us to “do good…especially to those who are of the household of the faith”? This refers to the fellow believers in our lives. Our family, church family, and believing friends are a special blessing to us and we should be showing them God’s love by doing good for them whenever we are given the opportunity. Thank you, God, for being SO good and sharing your goodness with us!
