The Doctrine of Suffering - Job – Part 55: Job’s Repentance Is Perfected
June 20, 2010

OUTLINE:

“behemoth”
transliteration from vehomoth (Hebrew) - means large creature; most likely, it’s referring to the hippopotamus, but it’s not strictly important here

FACT
Job is a creature just like the Behemoth, which establishes class, of which God is above.

“first”
from reshith (Hebrew) - means largest, strongest, swiftest; first in this sense

FACT
God certainly can kill or extinguish this great beast without a problem.

FACT
Man doesn’t stand a chance at defeating or capturing this behemoth on his own, establishing that among creatures, in terms of sheer power, Job is beneath the Behemoth in the order of things.

Transitive Property of Inequalities
  • A = God
  • B = Behemoth
  • C = Job
  • If A >B (40:19), and B>C (40:24), then A>C

Leviathan
refers to a large creature (eg: whale or crocodile) or similar imagery in the Bible…however, forces of chaos/affliction are consistent in its references. (Job 3:8, 41:1; Psa 74:14; 104:26; Isa 27:1)

Job 41:33-34
“Nothing on earth is like him, One made without fear. “He looks on everything that is high; He is king over all the sons of pride.”

Transitive Property of Inequalities
  • A = God
  • B = Leviathan
  • C = Job
  • If A >B (41:11), and B>C (41:10), then A>C

Humility precedes Adjustment to J+
(aka Repentance)

Job’s Degradation
There was a gradual amplification of a root of arrogance sown in Job’s heart over the course of our study.

Job’s Arrogance
Job’s claiming that he has the ability to deliver himself from whatever the charge against him is. He’s so confident in his victory that he’s saying he’d display the defeated charges for all to see!

The Results of Arrogance
Lack of humility means you remain inflexible, unteachable - the only option from that condition is farther away from Adjustment to J+!

Job 42:2
“You can do all things” - points to Job’s concession that God’s power is infinite and God’s wisdom is infinite

Job 42:2
“purpose” - points to the motivating factor behind His omnipotence - His sovereign will.

God’s Sovereignty
God’s sovereignty is His perfect, infinite, and eternal divine volition, which expresses itself through His omnipotence.

Deu 7:3
“Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor shall you take their daughters for your sons.

Job’s Repentance
Job’s confession and tone of penitence are now perfected.

Job’s Repentance
Job acknowledges the divine omnipotence that acts according to the sovereign will of God; this in opposition to his ignorance and feebleness.

Job’s Repentance
Job, in his humility, repentance, and re-orientation to the J+ of God, is once again in a position to learn and grow by spending BD on his afflictions.

Job’s Repentance
Job has accepted that there are great mysteries beyond his own understanding within the realm of God’s decree, even within the confines of his own existence.

Job’s Repentance
Job realizes that deliverance is within God’s power only.
