The Doctrine of Suffering - Job – Part 62: Applied Humility
July 1, 2010
OUTLINE:
Humility
Humility isn’t a punch-line or a way in which to avoid confrontation. Humility is something wrought through learning and spending BD on life.
Hab 2:4
“Behold, as for the proud one,
His soul is not right within him;
But the righteous will live by his faith.”
Humility
We don’t have the right to define humility on our own terms. We may even need to throw out previous definitions from out souls.
Deu 4:2
“You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
Humility
We must learn to get out of our own way! (aka humility towards God’s grace plan)
Humility
Humility is an attitude in your soul that can only be received by means of BD. Humility, as a function of faith, cannot be artificially manufactured through human will-power.
Producing Humility
Humility is supernaturally produced through the 2 spiritual power options.
“humble”
from tapeinoo - means to take in the Word of God; to submit to its authority and orient to grace; this is the prerequisite to Rom 1:17 “to faith” (doctrinal orientation).
“humble”
tapeinoo (“humble”) is in the imperative mood, which means it’s a command to take in BD so that humility can be supernaturally produced in the soul.
“mighty”
from krataios - points to the ruling system or a ruling power, which is BD
“hand of God”
(anthropomorphism) refers to grace giving by God (eg: Pro 8:10-36; Psa 19:1; 37:24; Isa 41:10)
Humility
In context (1Pe 5:6), He wants to GIVE us humility by means of BD!
Authority
Once BD is resident in the soul, it becomes the authority in your life. The ruling hand of God is BD.
Promotion
God promotes on the basis of BD only.
2Cor. 10:18 For it is not he who commends himself that is approved, but he whom the Lord commends.
“at the proper time”
en kairo - the subjunctive mood means that promotion is potential, not guaranteed, and is dependent on doctrinal orientation.
Humility
Humility is not a loss, but rather a gain. It’s a gift from God; something added. The only thing that is lost in the process is that deadly anchor in your soul that leads to death - arrogance.
Humility (cosmic def:)
The quality or condition of being humble; modest opinion or estimate of one's own importance, rank, etc. Synonyms: lowliness, meekness, submissiveness.
True Humility
Biblical humility is recognition of the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ and submitting to that authority, which is vested in His Word (aka BD).
Humility
Humility is not a loss, but rather a gain. It’s a gift from God; something added. The only thing that is lost in the process is that deadly anchor in your soul that leads to death - arrogance.
Humility
We must LEARN (by means of BD) to get out of our own way!
Humility
Humility is a grace gift from God, like everything else of any real value in this life.
Humility Is Freedom
Freedom from pride and arrogance.
Power Struggle
Humility is the only force stronger than arrogance.
Humility is a system of thinking.
Over time, it becomes a way of life! (ala Rom 1:17; Hab 2:4)
Divine Protection
Humility acts as a protective shield from the trappings of arrogance. A firm focus on Christ means your back is to the cosmic sludge and filthy thinking.
Achievement
Achievement belongs to God; happiness belongs to the believer. The doctrinally-oriented believer has degrees of happiness/contentment compatible with their spiritual growth.
Achievement
Achievement tied to self leaves a person confused and bored. True happiness/contentment never arrives, only greater and deeper reliance on people.
Counterfeit humility
- legalism
- self- effacement
- asceticism (self-denial)
- role model arrogance/iconoclastic arrogance (putting man on pedestals)
- self-righteous arrogance
- crusader arrogance
Humility is the basis for thinking under pressure.
Humility is teachability.
Humility means you remain teachable as you remain under the authority of BD.
Humility vs. Human I.Q.
Humility is what keeps an individual with a naturally high I.Q. teachable. Otherwise, they rest in their ability to “outsmart” others, contributing to their already inflated sense of self.
Parental Responsibility
Humility begins with enforced humility in the home.
Pro 3:33
“The house of the wicked” is the family living in the cosmic system, rejecting authority. The children are unteachable because they are arrogant (no humility).
Pro 3:33
“The dwelling of the righteous” is the family living under authority orientation. Children from these environments are teachable because they are authority-oriented (aka humble).
“Have this attitude”
from phroneo - means keep on thinking this doctrine; the imperative mood means it is a strong command
TLJC’s Humility
TLJC’s tremendous humility gave Him capacity for life and love and happiness, and He received great achievement in the area of thinking under pressure.
TLJC Learned Humility
As a member of the human race, our Lord had to learn humility from the authority of His parents. His parents had trained Him to use His volition so that He never sinned by His own free will.
Humility
Humility is not a loss, but rather a gain. It’s a gift from God; something added. The only thing that is lost in the process is that deadly anchor in your soul that leads to death - arrogance.
True Humility
Biblical humility is recognition of the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ and submitting to that authority, which is vested in His Word (aka BD).
True Humility
That same authority is vested in the spiritual gift of pastor-teacher, which means believers are to submit to their pastor’s God-given authority.
Humility is teachability.
Humility is a prerequisite for promotion.
True Humility
Humility means that you have the ability to think under pressure.
Humility is capacity for life, love, and happiness.
